Mr. Johnson has been involved with bioremediation at Battelle since 1992. He has designed and implemented accelerated in situ bioremediation (ISB) systems for treatment of chlorinated solvents at U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Navy sites. Mr. Johnson is a developer of the RT3D, a multi-species reactive transport simulation software, and has worked with the author of RT3D to improve the code and to customize it for application to actual sites (in both accelerated ISB and natural attenuation situations). Field work has included accelerated ISB of carbon tetrachloride and trichloroethene, soil composting, and bioslurping.
Mr. Johnson has also contributed to other areas of research at Battelle. He is the co-developer of the Remedial Action Assessment System (RAAS) models (algorithms) to simulate the effectiveness of a variety of remediation technologies. Mr. Johnson has also developed several calculational tools (e.g., for six-phase soil heating and ICP-OES data analysis) as Add-Ins for Microsoft® Excel. Other areas of interest include downstream processing in biotechnology and applications for polymers.
